
How do you solve/remedy rounded shoulders - what exercises and stretches are best? Bad posture/back?
I have rounded shoulders following the fact I gave up the piano over 5 years ago. I do not stand or sit up straight unless prompted to do so and even then I cannot reverse the position of my shoulders relative to my spine. I believe a hunch may eventually develop and at 22 I am desperate to remedy this fast!
Recently I have been trying stretching exercises in doorways (suggested in a previous question) but I was wondering:
a) if there are any courses in the United Kingdom that teach people how to sit/stand up straight (including long boarding school type courses)
b) more importantly what the best exercises are to straighten a rounded back. I am thinking of ballet/gymnastics perhaps? Or alternatively are Pilates and Yoga better options?
I am opposed to the idea of a brace as I believe its affects may only be temporary - is there much evidence of their actuall success in aiding recovery?

Pilates is a wonderful exercise - it will help you strengthen your upper back, open your chest and make you more aware of your posture. Work with an instructor that understands about postural imbalances and how to correct them. You may also consider working with a Feldenkrais practitioner - you may get more information about Feldenkrais at www.feldenkrais.com.
If you decide to participate in ballet or gymnastics - these activities are a compliment to Pilates work.
Becoming more aware of your body and participating in these exercise modalities could possibly enhance your piano playing, should you decide to go back playing again.
