Cell phones, college, and parenting... What are the rules?
I'm a 24 yr old mother of 2 going back to school to finish my degree.
My 18 yr old sister in law watches the kids while I'm gone. Should something happen while I'm out, I want to know.
For this reason I do not turn my phone off at school. When in class I set it to vibrate. However, in my yoga class I am unable to keep my phone right next to me. So I leave the sound on.
No one ever calls me. No one. I rarely use my phone. But I got a wrong number the other day while in yoga and my teacher was pissed.
I apologized right after class.
What is the etiquette? Am I wrong for feeling it is ok to leave the sound on? My hubby says I could be kicked out of the class for it.
You should definitely turn the sound off while in class. I have small children too and I returned to college while they were very young. Some professors will actually drop you from a class if your phone rings during their class. It's pretty rude to leave the ringer on, especially during a yoga class where the point is concentration and relaxation. Why can't you place it next to your mat while you're doing yoga? If you can't, I would leave it in the corner on vibrate and take a break once during the class to look at it. I understand wanting to be available immediately in case of emergencies, believe me. But you have to accommodate the professors, too. I am sure your sister-in-law can handle any emergency that comes her way but even then it's so unlikely to happen that you're better off turning the phone on vibrate.
